Our Materials

Gold-tone dangle earrings with iridescent white pearl bar beads, small round clear stones, and a dangling pearl bead, shown on a light stone surface.

What We Make With, and Why It Matters

Every Luna Cove piece begins with a material decision. We are deliberate about what we use — not just for the quality of the finished piece, but for the integrity of how it was sourced. Beautiful jewellery should not come at a hidden cost, and we believe that knowing where your materials come from is as important as knowing how they were made.

Freshwater Pearls

Pearls are at the heart of everything we create. We work exclusively with freshwater pearls, selected for their natural lustre, organic shape, and subtle variation — qualities that make each piece feel genuinely unique rather than mass-produced.

Freshwater pearls are among the most sustainable options in fine jewellery. They are cultivated in freshwater lakes and rivers, require no mining, and leave a significantly lighter environmental footprint than many mined gemstones. Their iridescence is entirely natural — no treatments, no enhancements.

925 Sterling Silver

All of our settings, chains, and hardware are crafted in 925 sterling silver — a hallmarked standard comprising 92.5% pure silver. It is durable, hypoallergenic, and one of the most enduring metals in jewellery-making.

We choose sterling silver for its clean, contemporary finish and its compatibility with pearls and coloured gemstones alike. Properly cared for, sterling silver pieces last a lifetime — which is precisely the point.

Gold Filled

Select pieces in our range feature gold filled components — a process in which a thick layer of real gold is mechanically bonded to a base metal core. Gold filled is meaningfully different from gold plated: the gold content is significantly higher, making it far more resistant to tarnishing and wear over time.

We use gold-filled materials to add warmth and richness to a design, without compromising on longevity. It is an honest material — it looks beautiful, wears well, and doesn't pretend to be something it isn't.

Monthly Gemstones

Each month, our drops feature a new focal gemstone — chosen for its colour, energy, or the story it tells alongside our pearls. These stones vary: tourmaline, opalite, moonstone, and others, selected as much for their character as their appearance.

Ethically Sourced, Every Time

We source all of our gemstones and materials through Kernow Craft, a highly regarded Cornish wholesaler and one we trust completely. We made this decision deliberately: Kernow Craft share our commitment to responsible sourcing and give us the confidence that every stone we use has been extracted and traded ethically — with full regard for both the people involved and the environments they come from.

For us, this is non-negotiable. We would rather limit our palette than compromise on how a material reaches us. When you wear a Luna Cove piece, you can be certain that nothing in it came at someone else's expense.

Care & Longevity

We design our pieces to last, and the materials we choose reflect that. A few simple habits will keep your Luna Cove jewellery looking its best:

  • Remove before swimming, bathing, or using perfume and skincare
  • Store in a cool, dry place — ideally in the pouch or box it arrived in
  • Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth after wearing
  • For pearls specifically, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight

If you ever have questions about caring for a specific piece, we're always happy to help — just get in touch.
